MOMBASA ROAD UPGRADE IN KENYA TO COST Sh59bn

Upgrading of mombasa road fund to be increase due to change in design after the original fund was Sh27 billion.

The superhighway construction will cost sh59bn which is more than the original plan due to change in design. The mombasa road will link Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

The plan is to drop the planned construction of an elevated highway over the entire 43.5km stretch to Rironi in favour of flyovers and underpasses on certain sections of the road. It will also include expansion of Airport South Road into a dual carriageway to compete. The expansion will enable it compete with the new security checkpoint and the planned airport rail link.

Development Director,  David Muchilwa, said “The project designs have been evolving along with the costs. He also said the stretch around Uhuru Park, for instance, will not have an overpass, so as not to cause visual intrusion. Motorists should have an unobstructed view of the surrounding greenery.”

The proposed superhighway will have special lanes dedicated to large-capacity buses. The lane will support the public and ease overcrowding in the rapid transit system (RTS). It will also feature multiple interchanges at various intersections alongside service lanes.

Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) dropping of the motorway runway will now have to expand the existing road to create additional lanes and accommodate the swelling traffic. motorise are expected to cruise on the road and be free from traffic jams after the construction of the project.
